Solid State Physics

About the Subject:

This subject provides the insight to physics of material starting with basics of matter waves, lattice vibrations and band theories to understand properties of metals, semiconductors, electric conductors, dielectrics, ferroelectrics, superconductors and thermal properties of materials

Topics to be covered in this Seminar:

Interatomic forces - lattice dynamics and simple metals- ionic and covalent crystals- Elastic waves in one dimensional array of identical atoms- vibrational modes of a diatomic linear lattice and dispersion relations- acoustic and optical modes- phonon dispersion relation-Fermi- Dirac distribution function- density of states- temperature dependence of Fermi energy- specific heat- use of Fermi- Dirac statistics in the calculation of thermal conductivity -electrical Macroscopic description of the static dielectric constant- The electronic and ionic polarizabilities of molecules- orientation polarization- Measurement of the dielectric constant of a solid- The internal field of Lorentz- Clausium-Mosotti relation armor diamagnetism- Para magnetism- Curie Lange in and Quantum theories- Susceptibility of rare earth and transition metals.
